Wellbeing Tips: Ways to Nurture Happiness

  • Positive Thinking
  • - thinking happy thoughts has a beneficial effect upon our and influence our actions and behaviour. Long term positive thinking has been found to have a beneficial effect upon our overall wellbeing by increasing the levels of immune antibodies.
  • Laughter
  • - adults laugh between 7-15 times a day, compared to toddlers who laugh about 400 times. Laughter encourages us to be happy by releasing endorphins. Laughter also exercises the lungs, stimulates the circulation, reducing the blood pressure and pulse rate.
  • Smiling
  • - previous studies have shown that by increasing the frequency of our smiles has a positive impact upon our wellbeing by making us feel happy. Smiling is contagious as it also encourages others to smile in response to us.
  • Relationships
  • - studies have shown that socially active people with good interpersonal skills have higher self esteem and are happier.
  • Nutrition
  • -eat plenty of foods which boost the body’s happy hormones- serotonin and endorphins: vitamin B complex, such as yeast extract, chicken, turkey, lentils, sardines and salmon; magnesium, such as brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, cashew nuts and soya; essential fatty acids such as almonds, olive oil, evening primrose oil, linseed oil sunflower oil.
  • Exercise
  • -this is a natural way of increasing happy hormones in the body which has the benefit of lifting our mood and reducing anxiety and depression if undertaken regularly.

Mind: What Makes Us Happy?


Happiness defined is the emotional state within ourselves and towards others responsible for giving us positive feelings which range from joy to contentment. Although we all have a unique profile of what makes us "happy", happiness is a common and easily recognisable experience which contributes to a state of wellbeing and optimism.
In general, evidence suggests that happy people:-
        - Live longer
        - Are healthier overall
        - Smile often
        - Are sociable
        - Are optimistic
        - Have high self esteem
There is no one formula for happiness, instead there are a combination of factors which when put together improve the chances of our being happy. Research conducted to identify the characteristics of happy people led to the following conclusions...more





Biblical Perspectives: Thanksgiving

Nehemiah 8:10
"For the Joy of the Lord is Your Strength."

If Nehemiah knew that the Joy of the Lord is our strength, why don’t we? Let me do a re-cap on Nehemiah’s plight- you will find his dilemma in Nehemiah chapters 1 and 2. He was an exile in Babylon (just like us) and was King Artaxerxes’ cup-bearer. According to the Jewish virtual library, a cup-bearer was “a high ranking royal official primarily in charge of serving wine to the king. Since he was close to the person of the king, who feared intrigue and the possibility of poisoned food, the cupbearer was required to be a man of irreproachable loyalty capable of winning the king's complete confidence.”

So every day Nehemiah risked his life by tasting the King’s drink before giving it to him. That means that he had the courage to accept death at any time. Clearly he took his job seriously. I imagine drinking the King’s wine provided proof that Nehemiah was overseeing his personal safety...more
